The Headline: Trump Tariffs Spark Trade War
It wasn’t just an empty threat. Donald Trump made good on his promise to slap Canada, Mexico and China with tariffs and now we are all paying the price. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is just one of the countless people today baffled over this controversial move (we know that is putting it lightly).
As the stock market suffered another crash, NPR reports:
China and Canada announced new retaliatory measures on Tuesday after President Trump's long-promised tariffs took effect overnight. Trump imposed a 25% levy on most imports from Canada and Mexico, with a separate 10% tariff on Canadian energy exports. Tariffs on Chinese goods were increased from 10% to 20%.
Late Tuesday, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Trump may announce a compromise with Canada and Mexico as early as tomorrow, but we aren’t holding our breath.
The other headline is Donald Trump’s joint address to Congress. We won’t cover what he said (whether you want to read the highlights or lowlights is up to you), but we will highlight one moment when Texas Congressman Al Green was removed from the chamber.
NBC reports, “Green, who has long pushed to impeach Trump dating to his previous term in office, stood and shook his cane toward the president in the opening minutes of his speech.”
